These bread crumbs will crumble up your health!

'Hearty'? Really?
Can you believe this long list that goes into your bread crumbs?

We were invited for lunch by a relative on a weekend and were welcomed with an extremely appetizing aroma of fried chicken and mutton biriyani. As it is the case with our customs, the children eat first, followed by men and then the ladies. So the frying was still going on and  I saw my cousin emptying a pack of bread crumbs on the plate and rolling the marinated chicken pieces into it. With my 'reading the label' obsession driving my instincts, I just grabbed the tin and had a look at the ingredients list. Well, I was expecting MSG to be the major part, but was shocked to see a whole list of chemicals, preservatives and additives that were actually into a simple pack of bread crumbs! These nasty ingredients are enough to give you a heart attack and the name of the brand is 'Hearty'!! Here is the list from the pack and a gist of what it really does to your body when it's consumed:

  • Enriched flour: wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin, riboflavin, folic acid-Good enough to deceive you thinking its 'hearty'
  • Corn Syrup- We know enough about the damage the high fructose corn syrup that happens to our body
  • Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Shortening (Soybean and/or cottonseed oil)- Care for a little dose of cancer causing elements?
  • Salt
  • Yeast
  • Whey
  • Soy Flour: Very high chances that it is genetically modified.
  • Malted barley flour
  • Wheat gluten: Gluten is associated with obesity and whole list of health concerns
  • Whole wheat flour
  • Rye Flour
  • Corn Flour
  • Oat bran
  • Corn meal: Very high chances that it is genetically modified.
  • Rice flour
  • Potato flour: Very high chances that it is genetically modified.
  • Nonfat dry milk: Any nonfat dairy product is loaded with chemicals and think of what would have gone inside that 'dry milk'
  • Soy lecithin
  • Calcium propionate (preservative): A little bit of toxicity is okay?
  • Sesame seeds
  • Caraway seeds
  • Salt
  • Grated parmesan cheese (part skim milk, cheese culture, salt, enzymes (rennet): It is highly likely that the rennet is from an animal source, and wonder if it is even Halal?
  • Monosodium glutamate: The silent killer!
  • Spices
  • Dehydrated Parsley Flakes
  • Onion powder
  • Garlic Powder
I got really tired of typing them. Think of our body and the amount of strain it is going to take internally to digest all these aliens!

Well, people think it is okay to use such things in the cooking once in awhile. But once in awhile, you tend to use them almost everyday, in different forms, be it your sauces, flavour enhancers found in instant noodles, stock 'cubes', health drinks, milk powders, energy bars, custard and dessert mixes and the list goes on. Declutter your kitchen cabinet from all these artificial things and load them with natural, wholesome, real food products and it is never so complicated as it sounds. You can simply buy a pack of fresh rusks from the bakery (make sure it doesn't have shortening as an ingredient!) and  put them in the processor for a few minutes and there you go! Or you can as well fry those chicken pieces without the bread crumbs and give up a little on that artificial taste.
