Can you count the number of ingredients in this cupcake?

Can you ever suspect that humble little cup cake before giving it to your child? That too when it is so delicious and easily available-I guess it just costs around 1 DH and is placed right next to the bread section that makes you grab one even before you can think whether you really need it. A friendly parent who was sitting next to me in my son's school offered small tit bits of this to my baby girl. It was really hard to say no to her love but then I felt it is important for everyone to know what is really in this cupcake like thing. First of all, what do you need to make a cupcake? Flour, butter, eggs, sugar, baking powder and vanilla essence are all that I can think of. Since it is a packaged food, it is understandable that it will have preservatives and vegetable oil fat instead of butter. But what justifies such a long list of 37 ingredients for such a small cake?

SugarWheat Flour, Water, Vegetable Oil (palm), Glucose Syrup, Corn Starch, Whole Egg Powder, Glycerine, Evaporated whole milk, emulsifiers: Sodium Stearoyl, Lactylate, Mono Glycerides of Fatty Acids, (Palm, Soya, Rapeseed), Modified Potato Starch, Baking Powder (E450, E500), Vegetable Fat (Palm Kernel oil, contains Emulsifier E492), Butter, Egg Albumen Powder,Whey powder, Skim milk powder, invert Sugar Syrup, Mono Propylene Glycol, Stabilizers (guar gum, carrageenan, carob gum, tapioca starch), Salt, Natural & Artificial Vanilla Flavour, Preservatives (calcium propionate, potassium sorbate), Acetic Acid, Sodium Acetate, Soya Lecithi, Natural & Artificial Caramel Flavour
Look at the above long list of ingredients! There are three different types of sugar along with vegetable fats, carcinogenic substance called carrageenan (read my previous posts on carrageenan here), artificial flavours and the worst of all, caramel flavour! According to some reports, artificial caramel colours may cause a lot of health issues that includes birth defects and even cancer.
So next time, better be careful about what you eat! Reading about the dangers of these chemicals, even occasional treats seem scary. Stay informed and stay away!

  1. I have always bought items that have the least number of ingredients, and I read them carefully!
